What an inspiring journey you've been on! It's amazing how life has a way of bringing us full circle sometimes. Your story really resonates with me - that feeling of being trapped in the "typical" life and knowing deep down that there must be more out there.
I love how you and Kenny held onto those early dreams of earthships and homesteads, even when life pulled you in other directions for a while. It takes real courage to break away from societal expectations and pursue an unconventional path. Thank you for sharing Sophie. I hope you are having a good week!
Writing Down the Bones is definitely an experience! I go back to that book for golden nuggets of insight and inspiration over and over. It always delivers!
It makes me so happy that you are sharing this alternative way of living in a way that is practical and possible to do in stages. It makes it a more accessible endeavor. So encouraging to hear how you can make the dream real.
This is an inspiring story. We should listen to our hearts more often and be braver when undertaking it! Thanks for sharing your journey to living off the grid. I would love to learn more to see how can one incorporate it into their own version of "freedom".
Thanks Rachel, funnily enough I am actually working on a piece exactly about that question "how can others incorporate elements of this way of life in their own lives " 😁
I love your story, and can *so* resonate with getting caught up in the trap of the 'more' treadmill... It is pretty amazing how life has a way of nudging us in the right direction, though. I'd love to see more snaps of your tiny home! Sounds like a such a cool way to live.
The cost of housing is approaching 40+% of income for many people. Shaving that expense line way down as you did opens up many degrees of freedom. Well done!
House prices are crazy here as well! It’s becoming near impossible for anyone to enter the housing market. Tiny houses really are a solution for this 😊
I love that lifestyle you have Sophie. I know it is not for everyone but I am one who for sure would do that, or at least can see myself doing it. It's been quite a journey until you get where you are and I'm glad to see that everything turned out well.
The main takeaway from me is simple is always better.
It was very inspiring. I love to read your posts. I'm with you, too. I've just returned from a cottage vacation with family. It's been six years since I took my two sons on a getaway—long overdue. It gave us a chance to get reacquainted and realize that we all have similar goals. It's about getting back to basics in all respects.
It's amazing what an impact it can have on us to go back to basics and just focus on what's right in front of us. Sounds like that was a lovely getaway with the family 😊
That's inspiring! I loved reading about yiur story. Beautiful but not sugar coated or over dramatic. Also, Writing down the Bones is probably the most concise and inspiring book on writing.
It’s such a good book! Highly recommend the audible version read by the author 😊 and thanks for your kind words, “not sugar coated but also not overly dramatic” is exactly the vibe I’m trying to go for 😊
Sophie, love it that you’re in a tiny house on some land AND off grid!
FREEDOM RINGS 🔔
There are many people that are downsizing and doing things like this or living in an RV, which is similar, on a piece of land they can call their own 💪
All the points you make on finances, not being reliant on the system for utility needs and the health benefits are spot on 🎯
I used to live in a big city in Atlanta, Georgia, USA 🌆
I don’t miss it at all and after living out on 10 acres in the country now in Florida USA helping my parents, growing food, and watching nature- the deer, ducks, turkey, birds, squirrels and turtles- you name it we’ve got it 😉
And at night because there’s no street lights and we’re surrounded by hundreds and hundreds of acres of land, a lot of are old farms, the night sky is so theatrical and magical 🌌
Not quite off grid yet, but have been working on that the last seven years. Have prepared for rolling power outages as I hear that’s happening globally, but won’t be an issue here. When one is self-reliant, we have plan A, B, C, and so on…..
So happy for you and your husband 🤗
Life is just too short not to enjoy and walk out and smell the flowers 🌻
Oooh your way of life sounds absolutely lovely too. There's just something about being out in nature 😊 love it, we do have to smell the roses, and all the other flowers 🌺
People hear the story that we have… it’s not the ending because we still have a lot of life to live but they don’t hear what it took to get us here…. what it really took. They may hear the story, but not all the feelings and emotions that go with it
So many places that I didn’t wanna be, and struggled being where I was because that’s where I was planted for that season to learn when I needed to learn to go to the next place and then the next place and so on. I moved down here to basically help my parents because they couldn’t take care of the acreage anymore. Then the illnesses started setting in for both. Mom is 86 I won’t go through all the medical issues however I almost lost her in 2021, fired two of the ICU docs as they did not know what they were doing ( I have been a nurse for so long especially ICU) and told them if you don’t know more than I know, you’re not taking care of my mother. Stepfather noncompliant diabetic with vascular dementia.
Is it easy taking care of two non-compliant people? Heck no‼️ Challenging to say the least ….
But God has surrounded me with this beautiful piece of property out in the middle of hundreds of acres of land, with 2 beautiful but humble homes and giving me the strength and the knowledge and expertise to do whatI need to do.
I am honored to take care of them even at the most difficult times and blessed that this is my home and my last resting place….. going to have my ashes scattered on the property whenever it’s that time. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else 💕
Wow, Sophie that’s a wild thing to happen. Being homeless in a moment would’ve been scary. But I admire how, both of you stood together through all of this. And may be it’s the natures nudge to let you start living your kind of life. Really happy that you are living this beautiful life today.

Such an inspiring journey!
We come to break points and amid the insanity comes clarity.
The simplest route and the most eloquent solutions that fit us perfectly.
Such a beautifully written piece.
Thank you so much for those kind words Maria ❤️
My pleasure

It’s good to learn how your tiny house came to be.
Thanks so much for reading Michela, glad you enjoyed it 😊
YAAAAY! for more people living their authentic lives! You should be very proud of yourselves🙂

I'm sure your parents appreciate having you around so much ❤️ and it sounds as if you are in an absolutely beautiful place for this journey too :-)

Absolutely, I do think it all needed to happen and I'm actually very grateful it did, because otherwise we would never be where we are now I think 😊
