Steps you take every day - great reminder. Thanks! I’m with you on the tea (green) and writing with pen and paper. Slowing down. Early morning is often my favorite time of day. A beeswax candle adds to the effect. 😊

Same, I love early morning when others are still waking up, it's my quiet peaceful time 😊

Really insightful article. We moved to a rural island when we semi-retired and we now do things slowly. I remember telling a still very urban friend that sometimes we just watch birds on our property for 30 minutes. She was speechless but her face said it all, “You’re crazy”

oh I do that too, we make up stories about them. We don't have a TV so it's our version of Netflix - Birdflix 😅

Thanks Sophie. I needed this today!

We all think moving somewhere prettier will solve everything. But then we bring all our old habits along for the ride. Guilty!

I've learned that moving somewhere new just gives us new problems to solve. But I will still do it anyway. You still spiral, still get caught in the chaos - you just have a better view while doing it.

Thank you Sophie!

haha so true, my view is definitely better now as I ponder new and old problems 😂

Practicing this daily with you: "I also make it a point to find the smallest pleasure and savour that moment." SAVORING ALIVENESS . yes yes yes

I love the idea 'slow living is not just a change of address'. Something i need to remember as i chabge my address to 'retirement' in the next 6 months

Expand full comment

oh very exciting! But yes I can imagine that even in retirement we can get caught up in the busyness of life

Oh, this is so on point with how I've felt lately. My life has become a bit more busy in recent months (not necessarily a busier calendar, just more stuff/projects on my mind). I sometimes walk down the hustle path again. But even though it's a busier time right now, I can still embrace more slow in life. The number one thing that helps me is stepping outside and looking at my plants in the garden or enjoying a matcha/tea while doing nothing else. And it doesn't need much, just 5 minutes of slow is enough to feel more grounded.

two of my favourite things as well 😊 glad it resonated with you!

Taking a deep breath is the biggest one for me too! That's all I need sometimes in order to pause and remind myself that a lot of the things filling up my mind are "can do's" instead of "must do's".

it's crazy how much of an effect just taking one intentional breath can have!

Yes, it's so underrated!

Well said Sophie. It’s the same principle I’m applying to my life right now. There are moments of busyness and stress but I try to get more moments where I can be fully present and enjoy the moment. Writing with a pen and paper is one those moments and for the same reason you said here

thanks Mario, glad it resonated with you 😊

Loved this! I have a similar list to trigger me back into slower going here in Italy too. It’s easier here than the US but busyness can suck anyone in anywhere, as you say! Slowing down requires a lot of consciousness

Very cool that we think alike! What's your favourite way to trigger yourself back to the slow life?

Expand full comment

Walking outside in the fresh air, focusing on breathing, or even just running downstairs to the coffee bar for a 5 min chat and espresso. Like a quick reset :-)

So true, often "going out for a coffee" is such a great excuse to get some fresh air when at work

Yes, right? It gets me up out of my seat, away from the screen, and talking with people, even just for a few minutes.

I love writing things down too and it does help clarify my thoughts and what I need to get done. I prefer journaling on my computer where I just do an absolute brain dump without any censoring.

Same it's so much easier to make sense of my own thoughts when I write them down!
